MURAL OF THE BANK OF ITALY BRANCH
IN CATANIA (CT)

The project, successfully completed, involved the creation of a mural on the facade of the Catania branch of the Bank of Italy, located on the corner of Via Carlo Sada and Via Luigi Sturzo. The work, entrusted to artist Chiara Capobianco, known for her unique style blending figurative and abstract elements, covers approximately 700 square meters of the exterior walls of the building's tower. The existing state of the exposed reinforced concrete exterior walls presented several critical issues. Parts of the surface concrete were unsafe and needed to be removed to ensure the safety of the building. Furthermore, traces of previous painting were present, requiring thorough stripping.

Before proceeding with the mural, the wall facing needed to be restored and remediated. The unsafe concrete sections were removed, the reinforcing bars were brushed and treated with a two-component, cement-polymer-based anti-corrosion product. Subsequently, the joint was reconstructed with a pre-mixed, single-component, thixotropic mortar reinforced with type "R4" polyvinyl alcohol fibers. Once the wall preparation was complete, the mural itself was painted. Chiara Capobianco used photocatalytic paints, also known as "smog-eaters," which help improve the quality of the surrounding air thanks to their ability to absorb and neutralize air pollutants.

An explosion of colors and shapes that celebrates Catania and its history, regenerating the urban environment through art and technology.

The mural's design, characterized by organic shapes and vibrant colors, represents an artistic interpretation of the Sicilian landscape and its rich history. The work blends harmoniously into the surrounding urban context, enhancing the building and the entire area. To ensure proper enjoyment of the work even at night, a dedicated lighting system was installed. Ten high-efficiency LED lights, each 110 W, were positioned at the top of the building's facades. The lighting fixtures were carefully positioned to ensure uniform illumination and best showcase the mural's colors and shapes.

The system is also designed for the installation of a DALI gateway, which will allow for the adjustment of light output and switch-on times. The entire project, from wall preparation to the creation of the mural and the lighting system, was carried out in compliance with current safety and environmental regulations. Cutting-edge techniques and materials were used to ensure the work's durability and weather resistance. The mural represents a significant addition to the artistic heritage of the city of Catania. Thanks to its beauty and originality, the work is destined to become a landmark for the local community and a tourist attraction. Furthermore, the use of photocatalytic paints actively contributes to improving air quality, demonstrating the commitment to environmental sustainability.
