PALERMO MINT PALACE AND NISCEMI
PALACE

In the beating heart of Palermo, amidst its historic streets and majestic squares, stand two buildings symbolic of a glorious past and an ever-evolving present: Palazzo della Zecca and Palazzo Niscemi. These imposing structures, silent witnesses to centuries of history, represent a priceless architectural and cultural heritage, worthy of being discovered, admired, and preserved for future generations. Built in 1699 by order of the Viceroy Duke of Veraguas, Palazzo della Zecca was conceived as the seat of the Royal Mint, a key institution for the economy of the Kingdom of Sicily. Architect Giuseppe Massa, commissioned to design the building, created an imposing and functional structure that still retains much of its original charm.

Its austere stone façade and central courtyard, typical of Palermo's architecture, tell the story of an institution that has shaped the city's economic and political life for centuries. Next to the Palazzo della Zecca stands Palazzo Niscemi, another building of great architectural value, deserving of rediscovery and valorization. Its history, intertwined with that of the Mint, testifies to the city's urban and social evolution over the centuries. To preserve and enhance this extraordinary heritage, a thorough survey of the building was conducted using cutting-edge technologies such as a 3D terrestrial laser scanner and a GPS station. This meticulous operation allowed us to create a detailed digital model of the building, capturing every single architectural and structural detail.

The relief of these buildings allows us to add an important piece of the history of Palermo, written in its stones.

The survey was not limited to the simple acquisition of geometric data, but also included material characterization and historical and archival analysis, to reconstruct the building's construction history and identify any past consolidation or renovation work. The survey of Palazzo della Zecca and Palazzo Niscemi represents a fundamental step toward understanding, preserving, and enhancing these two extraordinary buildings. Thanks to the technology and passion of those who worked on this project, it was possible to create a bridge between past and future, opening new perspectives for the enjoyment and protection of this precious cultural heritage.
